Cleaning Alcantara: how to do it properly

What is Alcantara?

Many believe that Alcantara is a type of leather, but this is just a brand name for a very fine microfiber fabric. Alcantara, developed by Toray Industries, is an engineered microfiber fabric made from polyester and polystyrene. Its luxurious surface and fine fabric structure, which resembles that of suede leather, is the result of elaborate processing.

Unlike genuine leather, Alcantara is lighter, easier to care for and offers a non-slip surface.

How is Alcantara made?

The polyester microfiber fleece is coated with polyurethane (PUR) on both sides and cut through to create the nubuck-like surface. Its material properties make it easy to clean, antistatic and hard-wearing.

Cleaning and care of Alcantara

• Remove dust and crumbs: brush the fabric gently in the direction of the fiber structure, use a vacuum cleaner with low suction power and a soft brush attachment.

• Damp cleaning: Wipe the affected area with a lightly moistened microfiber cloth in circular movements.

• Stain removal: Use special cleaning agents for Alcantara, apply them to a sponge and gently massage them into the fabric. Carefully wipe off the residue with a damp cloth.

Home remedies for cleaning Alcantara

• ‍Lemon water: Helps against water stains and grease residues. Gently dab onto the affected area and wipe off with a damp cloth.‍
• Vinegar water: For long-lasting odours, use vinegar water to neutralize the odour.‍
• Shaving foam: Leave shaving foam on the stain and then wipe it off with a slightly damp cloth.
